Solitary native bees pollinate a high percentage of fruits, nuts  and vegetables.

With so much attention focused on the vanishing honey bees, the Bee Goddess leads us to a woman named Karen Strickler who's an advocate and lover of  'other bees' ~ the wild pollinator bees.   She arrived at the Alcalde Organic Agriculture Research Station in northern New Mexico during the winter season with her slide show to educate and inspire us to enter this other world of the wild indigenous bees.   While in New Mexico, Karen shared her expertise with local orchard keepers who were cleaning the cocoons from their bee nests.  Karen holds a PhD from Harvard in this subject.

In these times of transition, where the natural environment is being witled away, anyone with the desire can get involved to help sustain the native wild bee population. Karen has an extensive website to show people how to best do this and she invites enquiries.   People can help provide flowers for these bees, as well as provide nesting places for them to lay their eggs.  These are the wild cousins of the honey bees.  They are solitary, rather than living in colonies.  Their nests are like tubes or hollow straws, sometimes tunneled into the ground, or in an old rotting log.
